Why allergen planning changes the specification
Powders can settle in hoppers, auger tubes, filler guards, conveyor areas and surrounding surfaces. If products include allergens, colourants or strong flavours, access and cleaning method become part of the machine selection.
A machine that is easy to run is not necessarily easy to clean between sensitive products. Tool removal, contact-part access and dust management should therefore be discussed early.
The customer’s food-safety or quality team should define the cleaning validation approach; the machine specification can then support that process.
What to review before quotation
List allergen groups, colour changes, flavour carryover risk, cleaning frequency and whether dry cleaning, wet cleaning or component removal is required.
Review whether dedicated augers, hoppers or funnels are needed for certain products, and whether the line layout gives enough access for cleaning around conveyors and downstream equipment.
Consider production sequencing. Running low-risk products before high-risk products may reduce cleaning burden, but the sequence must fit the site’s quality procedures.
Avoiding changeover bottlenecks
The filler is only one part of the clean-down. Feed systems, cappers, sealers, labellers, code areas, rejects and accumulation tables may also need line-clearance checks.
A realistic changeover target should include dismantling, cleaning, inspection, reassembly, setup checks and first-off approval.
